Not all passwords are created equally, and some passwords that seem complex to our human brains are actually very easy to guess by a computer. To help illustrate this concept, this tool is designed to analyze any password it is given and to provide a rough estimate on how long it would take a decent computer to crack it, along with some helpful suggestions on how you might improve your password.
This Password Strength Checker tool utilizes free, open-source technology based on standard web technologies (HTML+CSS+Javascript). Your password never leaves this page nor is it stored in any database or by any other persistent storage method. The full source code is available at Github for examination (and if you want to setup your own copy of this service!).
Having a strong password is your first, and sometimes only, line of defense for preventing unauthorized access to your accounts. Creating a strong password that is both not easy for humans to guess and not easy for computers to crack will help significantly in keeping others out of your accounts.
We all know of at least one person that stores their passwords on a sticky note on the monitor (is it you?). That sticky note doesn't help when you're not at your desk, or if it falls off, or if someone steals it! That's why we recommend using a Password Manager to help create and store passwords. Password Managers, at their core, are a secure, encrypted database of your passwords. Almost all password managers include a password generator for creating random passwords, as well.
